The Blog About Nothing

This time of year, I get impatient for Paul to come home. I know I signed up for these 9pm nights but gosh, it would be nice if he were here for dinner once in a while.

Enough whining for one day! Our produce guy dropped off a big box of loveliness today. We got a bunch of tomatoes, apples, oranges, tangerines, a huge bag of spinach, some onions and a couple dozen free range eggs. This past week, he lost his black lab, Molly, and Carly made him a card with a drawing of the dog as an angel with wings and a halo. I didn't intend that he would have to read it in front of us, but we just so happened to be outside when he arrived and Carly couldn't wait for him to see it, then Bree tried to give him one of our stuffed dogs 'to hug if you get too sad.' Well, the combined sweetness of these two kids just about did the poor man in; he got all choked up and had to leave really fast.

We've been talking a lot lately about protecting one another's hearts. I know it sounds super cheesy, but I think the girls get it. This was a good opportunity to talk about how to take care of people we know when they are sad. I think most kids are born empathetic and giving them early opportunities to see what good things a little kindness can do helps encourage that natural caring. Now, to be fair, they have yet to really demonstrate that kind of thing toward one another, but I keep hoping one day it will happen. =) It doesn't help that I'm deathly allergic to conflict so 'normal' sibling arguing and negotiations sound like WW3 to me.

So, yeah. That's all. I played in the grass with Bree on Tuesday and my allergies are trying to turn into something else. I'm refusing to allow that because we have fun plans this weekend, so I've been drinking chamomile tea with lemon and honey like there is no tomorrow. Haha wish me luck.

A friend of mine told me today that she and her family practice "secret good deeds". Or something like that. Basically each week they each do something nice for someone in the family without being asked and without taking credit. Ok the 7 yr old still takes credit after his secret good deed is discovered BUT the idea is to get everyone in the spirit of doing for someone else just because. I love this idea. Maybe you can start it with the girls to help them grow to appreciate each other. Also my friend is a teacher and she did a little class exercise that might be nice for your daisy girls. She had her class write one nice thing about each kid in the class. She had them start by writing "Carly is my friend. I like Carly because..." Sweet isn't it. Each kid will end up with a little note from each friend praising her for something she may or may not even know she is loved for. I'm learning so much from her.

I know how you feel! Tom gets home at 11pm every night. :( It sucks to not have them home for dinner. And lately he isn't even home on his one day off b/c of overtime. But he is next week and the kids are on break....I CANNOT wait! For once all 5 of us will be home! That hasn't happened in months!!! So you are so not alone!
