We got a cookbook from our great friends about gifts from the kitchen. Out of EVERYTHING in that book, Carly chose to make candied orange peels. They were quite a bit of work, but they turned out really well. While I was taking all the pith off the peels, Carly ate the insides of the (three) oranges. Her stomach hurt for kind of a long time after that.
Carly learned what par-boiling means...you do it three times with new lemons each time. Smells SO good!
Then, just in case you were getting confused about all the fruit and were tempted to think this was a healthy thing, you boil everything in sugar water for 15 minutes and let it sit overnight. Then you roll it in MORE sugar and let it dry.
And they come out looking like this. Yummy!
Above is our yummy dinner. Carly helped make this too. We had Thai braised chicken (I totally made it up, just chicken cooked in coconut milk and chicken broth with TONS of lemongrass, ginger and curry powder with mushrooms.) So good! Would have been better with cilantro and skinless chicken. Anyway, we roasted the tomatoes and they were fabulous. Would you believe me if I told you my girls ate all of this? Okay, don't believe me if I tell you that because they didn't. That's a lot of food for a little kid. But they did eat about half, and I was really proud of them for trying something so new.
