Day 11 - You're Welcome

I hate barf. I'm not going to post a photo of that.

I'm rushing through this 30-day thing because that's the only way I'll get through it. If I actually posted something new on a different day there is a high likelihood I'd make it to maybe 17, or 23 at best and then forget about it and move onto something else. It's not an awesome part of my personality, but in 2011, I'm embracing what IS...and what IS is that I'm awesome at the first about 85%. After that I'm ready to move on, and usually I do. So. Rushing.

In other news, I never did hear back from Carly's teacher about my super suggestion that we have a no-sugar class Valentine's Day party. When I was helping in art class, the art teacher and I had to work extra-hard to get the kiddos to stop talking and to stay in their seats...those things are usually pretty challenging for 13 5 year olds at 12:30 on a Friday (the class goes by halves to art), but the art teacher and I have noticed on Cupcake Day and on anyone's birthday, it's especially difficult. Today, whew! But when I said something to her classroom teacher about it, she immediately told me that no no no it wasn't the cupcakes, the kids had been like that all day. Can I call bs?

Lucky thing I thought ahead and bought a starfruit at Wegman's so Carly could have a special treat like her friends! I don't need to go on and on about my annoyance with how people STILL seem to fail at grasping the connection between how 'we' feed 'our' kids and how unhealthy we as a nation are as grownups. It's a really good thing I'm super hard-headed because I swear to you every time I speak up about this, most people are like "aw, let them be kids!" or "once in a while is okay!" and someone less mulish would probably have given up under the torrent of criticism and condescension. The problems with those two saying are a) since when did being a kid mean you have to eat crappy food? (You have heard that a thousand times before, be prepared, because you'll hear it again!)  The last time I checked, being a kid was all about playing in the dirt, learning stuff and having fun. and b) ONCE IN A WHILE is fine. Every stinking holiday and birthday? Not fine. When food becomes the only way we know how to celebrate, there is a problem.

I guess you can add that to the list of things I 'dislike strongly' right? I'll just take a deep breath (and a nap!) and will give us all at least a month before we have to discuss it again. =) You're welcome. Twice in one post! Amazing!

At least you no longer live in a state where king cakes randomly show up in class at this time of year.

What time do they give cupcakes? If there is a treat (for someone's birthday or a king cake) they always give it 10 minutes before school ends and let parents deal with it.

P.S. Your posts make me thankful my kid is a non-eater. :)
