One of my favorite things about summer is that no matter how busy we are - and we are always busy - things just seem so relaxed. I think it's because it's just too stinking hot to get too wound up about stuff.
My other favorite thing is summer food. We grill several times per week and I know Paul and the girls are sick to death of grilled eggplant and zucchini because they have told me as much, many times, but I cannot get enough of it! It's SO GOOD covered in olive oil and garlic. And at a dollar an eggplant from the farmer's market, you can't beat it for economy. You would think Ebeneezer would approve, if only for cheapness, but he's still begging me to make something, ANYTHING, else. So tonight we're having this enormous sirloin that came in the packet of beef we bought and along with it those gorgeous heirloom tomatoes. The girls are having pizza with friends...so everyone should be happy. =)
Carly is in VBS this week (vacation Bible school - like morning summer camp at a church, I had to explain it to Paul who never heard of such a thing), and I about died when I found out that there was a waiting list. I grew up in churches where they'd send out big buses to round up stray kids from the surrounding neighborhoods, I just couldn't imagine a VBS with a waiting list! But I guess I shouldn't have been so surprised. The best Mother's Day Out programs have two year waiting lists (so basically you sign up for the couple of mornings of daycare/preschool when you pick up your prenatal vitamins) and getting into kindergarten is like getting into MIT with all the interviews and background reports. Anyway, she got the very last spot in a class of kids a year younger than her. We told her that she's the special big girl helper, and she was very proud of that job...this morning she tried to bring her art supplies and some books so that the kids would have something to do. =) Afterward she told me that the "tall girls" did most of the helping but she didn't mind because they seemed like they needed something to do, too.
We went immediately from VBS to Carly's third session of swimming. She met her teacher, Emily G, who is a total badass. I say this because it was Emily G who went across the pool to get Carly to calm the heck down and float on her back during Session 2. I also say this because Emily G made Carly sit against the red fence far from the edge of the pool when Carly wouldn't sit still on the step and wait her turn. Carly came out of the lesson dragging her face on the ground so I knew something had happened and when I asked her where her teacher was she just asked if we could go. Badass Emily G explained what happened, so we're going to try again tomorrow. I guess they had a kid get stuck under the little step last week when he was messing around so they're being super vigilant...his head was out of water so he was fine, but he cut his leg and ruined his swim shorts. Anyway, I like Badass Emily G, so Carly's going to have to get over being embarrassed.
Tonight we're having dinner and playtime with some friends we haven't seen in a while. I'm really looking forward to the chill time. The girls are enjoying what is right now a 2.75 hour nap. NICE!
